SURVEY PARTICIPANT INFORMATION
Hello, thank you for your interest in taking part in our research project LGBTQIA+ Cultural Barometer. Your insights will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges of anti-LGBTQIA+ backlash experiences by artists and cultural practitioners, LGBTQIA+ led organisations and non-LGBTQIA+ organisations that programme/develop/curate/present/research LGBTQIA+ creative/cultural work.
The full Project Brief is available here.
SURVEY PARTICIPATION
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILTY
You must be 18 years of age or over to participate in this project.
WHAT WILL I RECEIVE FOR PARTICIPATING?
You will not receive any direct payment for completing this anonymous survey.
Upon completion of the survey, you will have the opportunity to indicate your interest in contributing further to this research through a follow up interview and/or in-depth case study with the research team. This additional participation is entirely optional and separate from the anonymous survey response.
If you are approached by the research team to participate in a follow-up activity you will be paid for your time (£75pp for an interview, £150pp for a case study). In addition these participants will also be entitled to one free online support session with a practitioner from the Artist Wellbeing Company if desired.
For the participants who provide contact details, we will share information of our research dissemination events at the projects conclusion.
DO I HAVE TO TAKE PART?
Your participation is completely voluntary. You should only take part if you want to and choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. If you choose to take part you will be asked to provide your consent. To do this you will be asked to indicate that you have read and understand the information provided in this document and that you consent to your answers being used for the purposes explained.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I TAKE PART?
If you agree to take part, you will asked a series of anonymous survey questions relating to your experiences of LGBTQIA+ backlash in your capacity as either a LGBTQIA+ artist and cultural practitioner, LGBTQIA+ led arts organisation or non-LGBTQIA+ organiser, venue or programmer. All of these terms and how this project uses them are discussed in detail before the survey commences. The survey is a mixture of multiple check box answers and free text answers.
At the conclusion of the anonymous survey, you will see an optional question asking if you would like to be considered for a follow-up interview. You are under no obligation to provide contact information, and choosing not to will not affect your survey submission in any way.
If you indicate willingness to participate in a follow-up interview, you may be contacted via email by a member of the research team within two weeks of the closing date of the survey. They will share a separate Interview Participant Information Sheet detailing the possible options of your further inclusion. If you have not heard from the research team within two weeks of the closing date please assume you have no been selected for further follow-up activities.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I START THE SURVEY AND CHANGE MY MIND?
You have the right to withdraw from participation at any time during the survey for any reason. If you begin the survey and decide to leave before completing it, you can do so without any negative consequences. Your decision to withdraw does not affect your right to return at a later date and complete the survey if you wish to do so.
Typeform (the survey platform) has an autosave progress feature that allows respondents to close the survey and return back to it. Answers are stored for 15 days so you can return to complete the survey at a later date. The research team will not see any of the answers until the Typeform is submitted.
After completing the survey can I reach out and ask to have my response removed?
Due to the nature of the survey being anonymous, it will not be possible for the research team to withdraw your submitted responses.
HOW LONG DOES THE SURVEY LAST?
The survey includes multiple check box answers and free text answers.
The survey completion time is somewhat dependent on the length of answers that you may or may not provide in the free text boxes, but we anticipate it will take between 5 and 20 minutes to complete.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS OF TAKING PART?
This is a minimal risk survey. An inconvenience may be the time and effort you take to be a participant. We recognise that the completing of the survey requires emotional labour, we are deeply grateful to everyone who shares their experiences with us.
Due to the nature of the project, you may find one or more questions that we ask to be upsetting or emotionally sensitive, particularly those related to your experiences of anti-LGBTQIA+ backlash. We have designed this survey with this sensitivity in mind. While the check box answers are required to advance through the survey, all free text boxes requesting further details of your experiences or reflections are entirely optional. There is no penalty for only answering the required information of the survey.
If you experience any distress while completing this survey or afterward, we encourage you to access support services. We've compiled a list of organisations that provide specialised support for LGBTQIA+ individuals and projects experiencing discrimination, harassment, or emotional distress.
The list of support services can be found here.
CONFIDENTIALITY AND PRIVACY
WILL MY INFORMATION BE KEPT PRIVATE?
With this survey being anonymous, we will be collecting no personally identifying information or contact information. All information that you provide will be kept confidential and any identifying information you provide in the free text boxes will not be included in any reports or project outcomes.
Only those that opt-in for a possible follow up interview will include their contact details. Such contact information will be held in a separate document to ensure complete separation from anonymous survey responses. Only the research team will have access to linked contact information for interview recruitment purposes.
HOW WILL YOU PROTECT THE INFORMATION I PROVIDE AND HOW WILL IT BE KEPT STORED?
All personal data will be stored under the terms of UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act (2018).
All anonymous survey responses will be exported to a password-protected cloud storage account and backed up on an encrypted external hard drive. Access to both storage locations is strictly limited to authorised members of the research team through secure authentication protocols.
All data will be deleted after 3 years.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT.
To share the findings of our survey and qualitative interviews, we will host a dissemination forum bringing together LGBTQIA+ researchers, artists, cultural practitioners, community groups, programmers and venue organisers committed to understanding and addressing the backlash against LGBTQIA+ cultural activities. This collaborative space using this research as the focus, will facilitate knowledge exchange and strategy development among those directly engaged with LGBTQIA+ cultural work.
Results may also be presented at conferences and published in academic or public journals.
